Cheap Flights to Dominican Republic from Canada!

Occupying the eastern half of the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic (or the DR, as it's often known) is a hugely popular destination, thanks to the portion of the country that most resembles the image of a Caribbean playland: the crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches lined with palm trees, of which the DR has plenty. This vision of leisurely days spent by the sea and romantic nights filled with merengue and dark rum is supported by what turns out to be the largest all-inclusive resort industry in the world.

Set on the most geographically diverse Caribbean island, the DR also boasts virgin alpine wilderness, tropical rainforests and mangrove swamps, cultivated savannas, vast desert expanses and everything in between within its relatively small confines - slightly smaller than the US states of New Hampshire and Vermont combined - providing staggering opportunities for ecotourism and adventure traveling.

The DR also lays claim to some of the more intriguing culture and history in the area, dating back to its early cave-dwelling groups, the Taínos , who recorded much of their activities in the form of rock art - it's quite likely you'll find yourself clambering down a dark cave to view some of these preserved paintings during your stay. In addition, as Dominicans are often quick to point out, their land was the setting for Christopher Columbus's first colony, La Isabela, and Spain's first New World city, Santo Domingo , at the end of the fifteenth century. Though the island quickly lost this foothold, the events that took place during its brief heyday did much to define the Americas as we know them.

Cheap Flights to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic's SILVER COAST , 300km of prime waterfront property on the country's northern edge, is the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean. With a seemingly unending supply of great beaches around the booming towns of Puerto Plata and Cabarete , such a designation is no surprise. The Carretera 5 skirts the coast all the way east from Samaná to just past Puerto Plata, making getting around this part of the region a breeze. The country's two major bus companies ply the highway, along with the guaguas and plentiful público taxis. Heading west of Puerto Plata is more of a challenge (but not impossible) if you don't have a four-wheel-drive.

Why Puerto Plata?

Puerto Plata is for those seeking an attractively-priced R&R active vacation with the option of lots of places to visit in the vicinity. Puerto Plata's centrally located international airport is less than a 20-minute drive from most hotels. Choose Puerto Plata if you like to explore. Luperón, Maimón, Cofresí, Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada are the main tourism enclaves located near Puerto Plata city. Sosua and Cabarete are about half an hour away.

Playa Dorada, 10 minutes to the east of Puerto Plata, concentrates the largest number of hotel rooms in the North. This vacation compound includes 15 low rise resorts built in a “U” shape and sharing a common gold sand beach and the Playa Dorada Golf Course, an 18 hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones. Meet guests from other hotels during evening outings at the casinos and night spots which are open to all guests. During the day visit the shopping center, the Playa Dorada Plaza, with its stores and movie theatre. Walking is safe and easy during the day and night, either on the beach or the sidewalk that connects all hotels. And because all the hotels are close together, this is a great choice for spring break travel.

Costa Dorada is Playa Dorada's next door neighbor to the West and is also an enclave of resorts. It is a prestigious Blue Flag beach, a European certification of high beach quality standards. Ocean World Marine Park, Marina & Casino is located there and is a main draw for day and night life in Puerto Plata.

Cofresí is located West of Puerto Plata City and is also an enclave of several smaller hotels and residential communities that use the same Cofresí beach facility. Ocean World Marine Park, Marina & Casino is located there and is a main draw for day and night life in Puerto Plata.
Fifteen minutes from Puerto Plata city, Maimón is located about five minutes from the highway entrance to Cofresí and its beach is dotted with new all-inclusive resorts that used to cater to Europeans but are now attracting large numbers of North Americans as well. Maimón is for those seeking rest and relaxation, with the main attractions being the beach and other comforts provided by the hotel.

Luperón is about an hour’s drive west of Puerto Plata and primarily caters to sailboat owners that have discovered the safety of its harbor. It is a laid-back community with restaurants scattered throughout that also cater to the increasing number of foreigners that have built their homes in the area. Nearby is the La Isabela National Park, complete with a small museum that showcases items related to the first European settlement in the New World.

Cheap Flights to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Exquisite fine white sand beaches stretching into the distance, lush tropical rain forests, and spectacularly beautiful mountains jutting toward the sky:  this is Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic’s foremost resort area.  Punta Cana is synonymous with championship golf, world-class casinos, exciting nightlife, and elegant spas.

40 miles of unspoiled beach line the coast.  Visitors revel in tropical warmth year round as they enjoy the finest accommodations at spectacular,  all-inclusive resorts offering value-added vacations at an affordable price.  Punta Cana is a traveler’s dream.

The origin of the Punta Cana resort complexes can be traced back some 15 years to the time when a dawning realization by investors from Spain and other parts of Europe occurred.  The idea came to them that the many acres planted in sugar cane at the tip of the island of the Dominican Republic could be converted into a superb resort area with sun and sandy beaches available year round.

During the 1990s, as development began, many Europeans rushed to take advantage of Punta Cana's desirable climate where it is consistently sunny and warm and rarely rains during daylight hours. Capitalizing on the low cost of the land and the desire for sunny holidays in the depths of winter, a half-dozen European hotel chains acquired large tracts of sugar-cane plantations and pastureland on which they erected more than a dozen resorts, most with no fewer than 500 rooms, some with even more, that  attract visitors from around the world.  The hotel designs range from the modest to low-rise mega complexes designed by the most prominent Spanish architects.

The resorts come complete with the most lavish beach and pool facilities in the Caribbean, spectacular gardens, and relatively new concepts in architecture, focusing on postmodern interplays between indoor and outdoor spaces.  There is no town, though the resorts use tiny, nondescript Higüey (Ee-Gway), 40 minutes away, as a mailing address.  Don’t expect native culture and crafts exhibited along dusty streets in quaint villages.  Look rather,  for large, all-inclusive resort properties  that are self-contained to meet the visitor’s every need for rest, recreation, and relaxation.

This area is made up almost completely of large all-inclusive resorts populated by couples or by families. Some resorts in the area cater to sports-minded people. Most of the resorts focus on family entertainment. The exception is at spring break time when groups of university students fly down from Canada and the US. The hotels preferred by spring breakers are the larger complexes, where nighttime entertainment is the liveliest.

The Punta Cana area caters to those looking for the type of vacation where the resort has everything and one never has to go outside the gates. The nearest city, Higuey (Ee-Gway), is about a 40 minute drive away. Beyond the resorts, there is mostly unpopulated countryside. You can literally walk for miles along the beach without seeing anything but an occasional unfinished construction project or the next hotel.

Off the beach, just a day trip away, is Santa Domingo, the oldest European city in the New World Even after five centuries have passed, the palace of the Columbus family can still be found here, as well as the city's sixteenth-century cathedral, the oldest in the New World.

Besides historical sites, rugged mountains, and beautiful beaches, Punta Cana has a wider range of sports than any other Caribbean Island. Fishing, wind sailing, parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, water skiing, horseback riding, and golf are a few of the many offerings.  The resorts provide programs to keep children happily occupied during part of each day.

Experience the spectacular sunrises and sunsets; revel in the beauty and enjoyment of each sun-filled day; and at night, swing to the rhythms of the Caribbean.  For an unforgettable resort vacation, take a break in the tropical splendor of Punta Cana.

Cheap Flights to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the New World, where the settlement of all the Americas began. See the first cathedral, the first hospital. Wander down cobble stone streets among the Spanish colonial architecture and imagine how things were back in the 1600s.

No other city in the Caribbean has a greater variety of restaurants and night life. There are so many restaurants in this city that it is practically impossible even for those who live here to have visited them all. And it's a great place to meet people. A lot of young single executives who come here to work end up leaving (if they leave) married to a Dominican.

Santo Domingo has great shopping. Major chains from all around the world have opened branches here and more will be opening soon. Discount stores offer great prices on designer brands, the leading shops offer clearance sales several times a year and there are many designer shops for more exclusive wear.

Santo Domingo is the most bustling and diverse city in the Caribbean. It has a population of over three million inhabitants within the city and the Province of Santo Domingo and sprawls out over 250 square kilometers.
